BEVERLY HILLS — A 31-year-old woman was sentenced today to seven years in state prison for a crash in Beverly Hills that killed two of her passengers and injured three others, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Megee said Taisha Warie Welch of Los Angeles pleaded no contest on Feb. 23, to two felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and admitted an allegation of multiple victims.
Welch had faced a potential maximum sentence of 16 years and six months in a state prison, authorities said.
On April 27, 2018, Welch was driving under the influence when she lost control of the vehicle causing a rollover crash near Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, the prosecutor said.
Preliminary reports at the time said the driver possibly ran a red light and was speeding before losing control and striking a tree.
The BMW X5 SUV was carrying six women, including the driver, between the ages 20 and 35 from the L.A. area.
Two of the passengers, Denesha Stewart, 24, and Jenetta Williams, 30, were killed. Three other passengers were injured in the crash, two of them suffering great bodily injury, the prosecutor added.
A GoFundMe account was started for Williams while her cousin told KTLA she was a mother of five.
The case was investigated by the Beverly Hills Police Department.
