Since Gays Can’t Wed, The Abbey Bans Bachelorette Parties

The Abbey Food & Bar, known as the best Gay Bar in the World, having won the title two year’s in a row from MTV’s Logo, announced that all Bachelorette Parties have been banned from taking place within its doors.

A press release from the bar called bachelorette parties an “offensive heterosexual tradition [that] flaunts marriage inequality.”

“Every Friday and Saturday night, we’re flooded with requests from straight girls in penis hats who want to ogle our gogos, dance with the gays and celebrate their pending nuptials,” said David Cooley, Founder of The Abbey. “They are completely unaware that the people around them are legally prohibited from getting married.”

“Over the past 22 years, The Abbey has been a place that accepts everyone, gay, straight, lesbian, transgender, bisexual and everything in between,” continued Cooley.  “We love our straight girlfriends and they are welcome here, just not for bachelorette parties.”

It has long been a policy at The Abbey to deny admission to groups in costume, including Bachelorette regalia, according to the bar.   Bachelorette parties had previously been allowed inside if they removed their costumes.

The Abbey’s new “Bachelorette Ban” comes on the heels of a ban on Gay Marriage in North Carolina and a number of other states across the south.

The Abbey encourages other gay-owned and operated establishments to institute their own bans as a sign of solidarity until Marriage is legal everywhere for everyone.

I “get it,” but isn’t this a bit self-defeating? What about gay-owned salons or gay-owned florists or bakeries? Are they going to turn away wedding clients because they’re heterosexual? Granted it’s not the same thing – no woman comes in for a penis hat bouquet/cake/dress or to ogle the gay proprietors, but if the Abbey is open to everyone, just enforce the ban on penis hats & lewd female oglers and maintain the peace. Otherwise ban parties of any kind. Besides, why would straight women want to come in & ogle gay go-go boys? Don’t they go to Chippendales with the “straight strippers” for that sort of thing?

I’m somewhat torn by this. As a gay man, I have numerous women friends, who are true friends. But I also know there are groups of women who go to a gay bar for the ‘thrill’. I do not want my spaces to be used as a ‘proof’ of your embrassiveness.

For all of these bachelorette parties, how many actually had gay male invites?

I have no problems with women in gay bars. I welcome them. What I object to is the concept that these women are simply using a gay bar to increase their ‘street cred’…:We’re cool because we can party at a gay bar!”

I guess we have not learned too much over the past few years. Now we are doing the same thing to them? Let’s be inclusive and not exclusive.

I think it’s better to make friends with everyone, than to give people more reasons not to like us.

That is the lesson I learned from Harvey Milk Day!

“Gay brothers and sisters, what are you going to do about it? You must come out. Come out… to your parents… I know that it is hard and will hurt them but think about how they will hurt you in the voting booth! Come out… to your relatives. I know that is hard and will upset them but think of how they will upset you in the voting booth. Come out to your friends… if they indeed they are your friends. Come out to your neighbors… to your fellow workers… to the people who work where you eat and shop… Come out only to the people you know, and who know you. Not to anyone else. But once and for all, break down the myths, destroy the lies and distortions. For your sake. For their sake. For the sake of the youngsters who are becoming scared by the votes from Dade, [Florida] to Eugene, [Oregon]. If Briggs wins he will not stop. They never do. Like all mad people, they are forced to go on, to prove they were right! There will be no safe ‘closet’ for any gay person. So break out of yours today — tear the damn thing down once and for all!”

“North Carolina and a number of other states across the south” — there are 31 states that ban gay marriage, not all of them can be in the South. There are people fighting for equality there too.

It is a brilliant political statement.

I support this. Gay bars are not there for straight women to use them so they can show how cool they are because they go to gay bars. Although “completely unaware” might be a bit harsh. I doubt any adults in this nation are “completely unaware” that same-sex marriage is outlawed in most states.

what a snooze. who cares what cooley does in support of gay marriage, since he has been taking advantage of the weho crowd for years with his overpriced, overhyped play ground. this just occured to him? or is this a lame publicity stunt to bring himself attention?
so now victim becomes victimizer? I agree with the other comments about whehter this kind of ‘victim mentality’ should prompt other businesses to stop doing business with straight people. it’s a ridiculous path to boredom and irrelevance.

I can’t fathom what sort of benefit the Abbey would garner from this sort of exclusion. Forget about street cred: any bachelorette knows the gay clubs have the best music, best looking men and are reasonably safe from predatory hetero males. Has anyone ever benefited from discrimination?
