The Orange County Register reports that a West Hollywood man of Russian descent is on trial in Orange County in the case of a 2007 murder of a man and his daughter, and the attempted murder of the man’s wife. The three were family members of his friend’s ex-girlfriend.

Vitaliy Krasnoperov, from West Hollywood, is said to have encouraged, facilitated and joined a conspiracy to help murder the family. He faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted, as does another co-defendant. The third man, Iftekhar Murtaza, could get the death penalty for setting the circumstances in motion in an effort win back his estranged girlfriend.

In court, the prosecutor said that within about a day of the breakup in March 2007, Murtaza sent instant messages to Krasnoperov saying that he wanted to kill Dhanak’s parents. Krasnoperov responded that it would be too obvious to kill them so soon after the breakup and that he should wait He also added that he knew Russians “who do this kind of work.”

The incident went down in May of 2007 at the Anaheim Hills home of the former girlfriend’s parents. Police believe that the ex-boyfriend, Murtaza, broke into the house with an accomplice and attacked the family before setting the house on fire. The father and daughter were found dead at the scene of another fire near a bike trail. The mother was found beaten and with her throat slashed on a neighbors lawn, but she survived.
