Will L.A. City Council Members Roll Back Their Homeless Parking Bans?

HOLLYWOOD (Los Angeles Magazine) — A homeless veteran prepares to spend the night in one of L.A.’s few Safe Parking lots On Tuesday, Los Angeles City Councilman David Ryu quietly introduced a motion that would rescind an “Overnight Parking District” he created in Hollywood in April.

Encompassing a small cluster of commercial streets between Santa Monica Boulevard and Lexington Avenue, the established district made it illegal for cars to park in the area between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. at the risk of being towed. According to the original resolution, it was intended to protect residents from “the problem of criminal activity and health and safety issues related to non-residents and homeless parking their vehicles overnight in their neighborhood.”

LAFD incidents involving the homeless disproportionately high, data shows

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles Fire Department Station 9 in Skid Row is one of the busiest in the nation.

It serves the smallest response area in the city, but has the highest call load. The station sees 80 to 100 runs a day and the vast majority of the patients are homeless.

One homeless man, Maurice Russell, said the only way he and his friends can get help is to call 911.

LA Councilman David Ryu Proposes Overnight Parking Lot For Homeless Population

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Los Angeles City Councilman David Ryu is taking steps to address the issue of homelessness through the proposal of a Safe Parking program.

Ryu introduced a motion Feb. 7 calling for the consideration of a program that would provide parking areas for people who live in their vehicles.

“Safe Parking lots allow Angelenos who are living in their cars and RVs a safe place to park overnight with access to bathrooms, services and outreach,” Ryu said on Twitter.

Newsom Visits SoCal Homeless Shelters to Listen to Those in Crisis

KOREATOWN (CBSLA) — Gov. Gavin Newsom toured Southern California homeless shelters Tuesday as he continues to fight to add $750 million to tackle the homelessness crisis.

The governor started his day in Riverside before visiting a board and care facility in Koreatown where he listened to the stories and concerns of residents living there.

Newsom said that homelessness has increased in California by 16.4% from this time last year, a jump of just over 151,000 people — 108,000 of whom are unsheltered. He said he and other state law makers have taken action to help across the state.
