Bruce Vilanch, Thelma Houston Headline Farewell to The Factory’s Backlot

WEST HOLLYWOOD (Broadway World) — Back to the Backlot, a live musical comedy variety show, will bring back many of West Hollywood’s famed Backlot Theatre’s original showcase stars to commemorate the end of an era of one of the country’s most famous venues for live entertainment.

The event will mark the beginning of the preservation project known as Robertson Lane, which will re-build the venue formally known as The Factory and the famous Studio One Nightclub.

The historic building opened in 1929 as the home of Mitchell Cameras, an early and important movie camera maker for the large movie studios. It was then the Studio One nightclub/Backlot Theatre from the late 1970s through the 1990s.

Jay Mohr to Headline 19th Annual Comedy for a Cure -April 5

LOS ANGELES — Benefiting the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, Comedy for a Cure is a premier event to raise critically needed funds for finding a cure for tuberous sclerosis complex,

The Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance) announced today that Jay Mohr, comedian, actor and best-selling author, will headline its 19th Annual Comedy for a Cure.

The event brings together top comedians to raise funds for those impacted by the rare genetic disorder tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), which affects more than 50,000 in the United States and 1 million worldwide. The event will be held at the Academy LA in Hollywood on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at 5 p.m.

This year’s lineup includes headliner Jay Mohr and additional performances by Kira Soltanovich and Adam Ray. Mohr, who has been performing since he was 16 years old, is a comedian, actor and best-selling author. Comedy Central named him one of the 100 greatest stand-up comics of all time.

The event is emceed by long time TS Alliance supporters Jim O’Heir from Parks and Recreation and Bless This Mess, Alex Skuby from The Fosters and King of Queens, and comedian Craig Shoemaker.

The event is also supported by members of the Comedian Committee, Kate Flannery from The Office, Mo Collins from Fear the Walking Dead, John Henson from ABC’s Wipeout, Melissa Peterman from Reba, Shane Brady from Doctor Sleep, and Wendy Liebman, actor and comedianNotable attendees from prior years include Chelsea Handler, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jane Lynch, Bill Maher, Julianne Moore, Bob Saget, Patricia Heaton, and others.

During the event, the TS Alliance will honor The Carroll Family with the Courage in Leadership Award, while also paying tribute to Dr. Shafali Jeste of UCLA and Edina Kiss as the TS Alliance Champions for their outstanding service to combat TSC.

Comedy for a Cure has raised nearly $5 million toward finding a cure for TSC, providing support and information to anyone impacted by the disease, funding necessary research and raising visibility of the disorder. TSC is a rare, genetic disorder that causes tumors to form in vital organs and is the leading genetic cause of both autism and epilepsy.

WEST HOLLYWOOD (LA Times) — The Comedy Store is adorned with the names of hundreds of great comedians who have passed through its doors. It’s “Potluck” open-mic night has a few ground rules: Buy two drinks, no heckling and absolutely no digital recording of any kind. After entering the Sunset Boulevard venue’s dim patio room and hearing the comics’ three-minute sets, it’s easy to see why.

At the Comedy Store, taboo doesn’t exist. Jokes about homeless people, suicide, a fat woman, lesbians and 9/11 echo off the neon-trimmed walls, along with expletives and slurs so foul they’d almost certainly earn their writers trial by Twitter if uttered in a Netflix special or podcast. But this was neither, and the room roared with laughter.

Comedy Show, All The Leaves Are Groundlings, Opens October 4

LOS ANGELES — All the leaves may be brown everywhere else this fall, but Los Angeles’ favorite sketch and improv troupe is keeping things evergreen with their upcoming main company show, All The Leaves Are Groundlings. Bring your mamas, papas, friends and lovers to The Groundlings Theatre and for a truly magical night of laughter and hilarity.

The cast includes Matt Cook, Josh Duvendeck, Ryan Gaul, Patty Guggenheim, Kiel Kennedy, Jessica Pohly, Lisa Schurga, Eliot Schwartz and Greg Worswick , directed by Michael Naughton.

Opening Night will take place on Friday, October 4th at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $50.00 and include hors d’oeuvres, specialty cocktails, wine and beer, as well as coffee and desserts after the show. The show will then run every Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (Tickets $20.00-$25.00) through November 23rd.

Preview shows for “All The Leaves Are Groundlings” begin Saturday, September 7th at 10:00pm and will run until opening night.
