MTA Bus Driver Shot and Killed on Santa Monica Boulevard

An MTA bus driver was shot on Sunday morning on Santa Monica Boulevard at West Knoll. The driver was killed, according to council member John Duran and Mike Parker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Witnesses reported that the suspect shot the bus driver then got off the bus with hands in the air and waited for Sheriff’s Deputies to arrive. The bus rolled backwards and hit a few parked cars. The incident happened at about 9:10AM this morning just steps away from MTA’s bus yard.  A supervisor near the scene preparing for the AMGEN bike race street closures happened to see the bus roll backward and ran to the bus to see what the problem was.

Male Murdered in Street on Orlando, Stabbed to Death

A male, possibly wearing female lingerie, was stabbed to death on Orlando near Oakwood early this morning. UPDATE:An LAPD press release said that Richard Herrera, 29, has been arrested in connection with the murder.  The victim was said to be a 27 year old Asian male but the name was not released.  The press release stated, “Detectives believe the victim was involved in a dispute with the suspect which resulted with the suspect stabbing the victim to death.” We initially reported last night on Twitter that a victim was said to be laying in the street on Orlando near Oakwood.  Initial 911 reports to Los Angeles Police just after 1:30AM said that residents in the area thought someone had been hit by a car, or that someone had been dumped in the intersection from a moving car.  Dispatchers initially put out the call as a felony hit and run and they put out a description of a vehicle seen speeding from the area. LAPD officers responded to the scene and additional units were soon requested.  Witness reports said that fire and rescue personnel tried to resuscitate the victim but he was apparently pronounced dead at the scene.  The body was removed from the street at about 7AM. A crime scene was established for the surrounding area overnight.  Police knocked on the doors to neighboring houses to find out if residents had security cameras or if they had any other information about the incident.  The police tape was reportedly still up as of at least 9AM this morning.

Rape Reported in Alley off Busy Melrose Avenue

Los Angeles Police have sent out an alert about a rape that occurred in an alley off of Melrose and Poinsettia Place just after midnight on Wednesday. Sweetzer Arson Suspect Arrested at the Body Shop

Weho Daily broke the news yesterday to our readers on Twitter that the suspect wanted for the March 4th apartment fire on Sweetzer was apprehended after Sheriff’s deputies received word she was in the area. West Hollywood Sheriff’s deputies located the suspect, now identified as 25 year-old Samantha Scarano, at the Body Shop on Sunset. The location is right around the corner from the fire location. An anonymous tip had reported that she was at the location performing. Deputies immediately responded and surrounded the location to ensure all exits were covered.

Trans Woman Sentenced for Stabbing Lawyer in Court

A 40-year-old defendant convicted of stabbing a workers’ compensation attorney in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom was sentenced today to prison, the District Attorney’s Office announced. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Edmund William Clarke sentenced Andre Torres to 11 years to life in state prison. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Hilary Williams.

Torres, who identifies herself as a male-to-female transsexual, was convicted on Feb. 15, 2012, of one count of willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder. Jurors also found true allegations that the defendant personally used a knife and personally inflicted great bodily injury on the victim.

Suicide and Attempted Murder at Park La Brea

Weho Daily reported on  Twitter Friday night about an LAPD officer requesting backup to Park La Brea for an apparent suicide.  Local media reported a short time later that the incident was actually a suicide and attempted murder.Los Angeles Police responded to the residence to meet family members who were outside fearing that the man was suicidal. They made entry to the apartment on Orange Grove and found the man hanging and requested fire and rescue to the location to see if he could be revived.  At that point, he was not conscious or breathing. No mention of the woman was made when responding officers initially requested medical help to the scene. According to KTLA, while the officers were inside the apartment they heard a woman calling for help from a bathroom.  She had been injured and was rushed to the hospital for treatment of head trauma.  She is expected to survive. The man and woman were married, and the man was said to be in his 30’s and woman in her late 20’s.

Former Playmate Takes Plea in Shooting of Husband

A former Playboy Playmate was sentenced today to nine years in state prison after pleading no contest to attempted voluntary manslaughter in the shooting of her husband, the District Attorney’s office announced. The shooting incident occurred in October 2010 on Hawthorn just northeast of La Brea and Sunset Blvd. Victoria Rathgeb, who was named Playboy Playmate of the Year in 1968 and appeared in the magazine under the name Angela Dorian, entered the plea to an amended count before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Barbara Johnson. Rathgeb, 66, also admitted that she personally used a gun and caused great bodily injury to her husband, Bruce, whom she shot in the back. He has since recovered and was in court but did not make a statement.

Gunshots, Man Tries to Push Girlfriend Out Window

West Hollywood Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an apartment at Fountain and La Cienega this morning on a report of possible gunshots and a woman screaming in a possible domestic violence incident. The incident unfolded around 9:45AM on Sunday and the loud disturbance immediately generated numerous phone calls to 911. Deputies were on the scene within moments, but more information came in to 911 while they were en route about the man trying to push a woman, possibly his girlfriend, out a window. Witnesses on the scene were confident they heard gunfire and deputies called in a helicopter as they prepared for a cautious approach to a dangerous situation with a containment set up around the building to prevent the suspect from fleeing. They were able to avert a drawn out incident, however, and quickly took the man into custody.

DA Seeks Capital Murder in Ben-Meir and Aragon Deaths

Prosecutors added new capital murder charges today against one of three defendants charged in a crime spree that left two men dead – one of them an MTV music coordinator. Deputy District Attorney Robert Serna with the Hardcore Gang Division filed an amended complaint charging Jabaar Vincent Thomas, 26, with the murders of Gabriel Ben-Meir and Marcelo Aragon. The special circumstances include murder for robbery and multiple murders, making Thomas eligible for the death penalty. Ben-Meir, a 30-year-old MTV music coordinator, was killed on May 8 after parking his car outside his Wilshire area home. Aragon, 35, was killed on April 30 in the Pico-Union section between the Wilshire area and downtown Los Angeles.

Barricaded Suspect, Possibly Armed in Laurel Canyon

Los Angeles Police are on the scene of an apparent barricaded suspect in the Laurel Canyon of the Hollywood Hills tonight. The initial call was dispatched by LAPD as a possible domestic violence situation and kidnapping with the suspect possibly “armed with an AK47.”  Those details have not been confirmed or elaborated upon. As of now, few details are available, but there is a massive police presence around a home on Rugby Place off of Lookout Mountain in Laurel Canyon. SWAT vehicles and helicopters have been on the scene since just after 7PM. The initial call was dispatched around 6:30PM 4:30PM.
