Crosswalk at Westmount and Santa Monica Blvd

The City West Hollywood City Council has approved the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) at the pedestrian crosswalk at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Westmount Drive. Although the current crosswalk and signage meet State and Federal standards, the crosswalk is located in an area with both high vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

“I want to thank my colleagues on the City Council for unanimously approving the installation of flashing beacons on the pedestrian crosswalk of Santa Monica Boulevard and Westmount Drive,” said West Hollywood Councilmember John Duran.  “This highly used crosswalk has been the subject of numerous incidents in which distracted and aggressive drivers have failed to yield to pedestrians, putting their lives at risk.”

“We hope these beacons will increase driver alertness and contribute to pedestrian safety,” continued Councilmember Duran.

Santa Monica Boulevard west of La Cienega Boulevard is one of the most heavily trafficked thoroughfares in West Hollywood, traveled by an estimated 60,000 vehicles per day. The goal of the installation of the high-visibility crosswalk lights is to increase safety for pedestrians who live and shop in the neighborhood, while not significantly impeding traffic.

The City will continue to explore other options for increasing safety in crosswalks throughout West Hollywood. In addition, a status update regarding the effectiveness of the installation of the RRFB at Santa Monica Boulevard and Westmount Drive will be available in six months.
