The family believed he had left his grandparents’ home because he was anxious about an upcoming test and was worried about his terminally-ill grandfather. The family was concerned because Eli recently learned how to use bus transportation and they believed this may have interfered with efforts to locate him.

On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, a West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station deputy conducting a foot patrol at Plummer Park contacted a man sleeping near the tennis courts. A wanted persons check of the man made on the deputy’s mobile computer revealed he was Eli Rabago, a missing person from Tucson, Arizona, classified as a critical missing person because he was developmentally disabled and needed medication.

Eli told the deputy he had hopped a train from Arizona to Los Angeles and had been in California for about one week. Once in the Los Angeles area, he showered at youth centers and ate from local food lines.

Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies in Arizona were advised by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies that Eli was located. Eli’s mother, Marta Rabago was notified and was relieved that her son had been found. She and her husband, Ruben, immediately flew to California and were reunited with their son at the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station that same afternoon.
