The initial call was dispatched by LAPD as a possible domestic violence situation and kidnapping with the suspect possibly “armed with an AK47.”  Those details have not been confirmed or elaborated upon.

As of now, few details are available, but there is a massive police presence around a home on Rugby Place off of Lookout Mountain in Laurel Canyon. SWAT vehicles and helicopters have been on the scene since just after 7PM. The initial call was dispatched around 6:30PM 4:30PM.

The suspect is described as a white male in his mid 30′s with a thin build and blond or brown hair.

KTLA reports that the man is “suspected of kidnapping his girlfriend and raping her” and that she managed to escape the house.  As such, the incident is apparently not a hostage situation.

UPDATE: Loud flashes and bangs were heard in the area around 10PM, most likely flash grenades and possibly other less-than-lethal methods to try to flush the suspect out.

SUSPECT IN CUSTODY: LAPD called a “code 4″ and said they had the suspect in custody shortly after 11PM.  We will update this story with more details about the incident as they emerge, most likely with an update in the morning.

Live on street adjacent to incident. There were at least 2 dozen Black and White and unmarked L.A.P.D cars and full SWAT team. We have learned he had a record as a sex offender and had been holding this girl captive for days, raping her. When they finally apprehended him, he was reported to be crouching in a corner of the house, laughing and saying hi to the police! Crazy.

I’ve got some pretty solid footage of the police chopper with search lights on the house, as well as audio of the gun shots (or sandbags and tear gas?) with visible muzzle flashes…. let me know if you’re interested in purchasing

I have photos starting at 5:00 with tac units, et at arriving into the 6pm hour. Photos of the police and the identifiable vic being taken away. Timeline in article is way off from what happened. Tear gas was still being sent in after 11pm. Observed all from directly above the street.

  8. Jennifer Cyour name... says:

The initial call may have gone in around 4:30, but a *lot* of police units were on the move toward Rugby Place between 6:30 and 7:00. I was e-mailing someone at the time, and kept interrupting myself with such statements as, “I have never heard so many sirens at one time!” “My goodness, something major must be happening!” So the paper does the correct timeline as far as the major portion of the police activity is concerned.
