May is National Bike Month, a celebration of two-wheeled human-powered transportation and exercise. A number of events are being planned this week, and especially on Thursday which is billed as Bike-To-Work Day.

Bike-To-Work Day is held annually around the country to promote bicycles as a safe and healthy option for commuting to work. On Thursday, the City of West Hollywood is encouraging people to participate in by sponsoring a morning pit stop location for commuting cyclists from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. at San Vicente Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard on the south side of the street.

Anyone who pledges to ride to work at www.californiabikecommute.com will be entered into a drawing for prizes. Public transportation will be free to cyclists that board with their bikes and/or helmets on Thursday, May 19, 2011 (it still counts if you combine cycling and taking transit to work).

Bike-To-Work Day is the highlight of Bike-To-Work Week, which runs from Monday, May 16, 2011 to Friday, May 20, 2011. There are special events planned throughout the region all week long.

On Tuesday, the annual “blessing of the bicycles” will take place at Good Samaritan Hospital, 1225 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles at 8 a.m. Free bike checks and breakfast will be provided at the “blessing.”

Also on Thursday night from 6PM to 8PM, a bicycle workshop for young and old will be taught by a League of American Bicyclists certifed Cycling Instructor. The workshop will provide an introduction to safe bicycling tips and techniques. Participants will learn about Helmet Safety and Fit, Bike Types & Fit, Weather Preparedness and Route Planning. The event is presented by Sustainable Streets and will be held at Roxbury Community Center, Room 102, at 471 South Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills.
