A transient man was reported to have randomly attacked a woman on Sunset Blvd on Tuesday for no apparent reason, however initial calls to 911 indicated that some witnesses believed a robbery was taking place.

The incident occurred at Sunset Blvd and Alta Loma at about 3:45PM in broad daylight. A number of Weho Daily readers were near the scene and provided a few details about the incident.

“Some crazy guy punched a lady and went for her purse. He was tackled by bystanders,” said Donny Aldo. “I was eating lunch and called 911 myself.”

Other bystanders apparently tackled the man, pending the arrival of West Hollywood Sheriff’s deputies. One Weho Daily reader was passing by the location in a car, and a co-worker jumped out to rush to the aid of the woman.

Unfortunately, the victim sustained some injuries in the attack and the Fire Department was summoned to the scene to attend to her injuries. The victim sustained a fracture eye socket and several stitches to her right eye. She also suffered swelling and bruising to her face and body. The victim was transported to Cedars Sinai Hospital after being treated by Los Angeles County Fire Dept. Engine #7.

According to the Sheriff’s Department’s account of the incident, the suspect walked up to the victim and punched her in the face several times with a closed fist, causing her to fall to the ground. While the victim was lying on the ground, the suspect continued to kick the victim, in her legs, stomach and back area. During the attack, a witness came to the victim’s aid and held on to the suspect until Deputies arrived. Deputies were informed by witnesses that the suspect viciously attacked the victim for no apparent reason.

West Hollywood Station detectives later presented the case to the Beverly Hills office of the LA County District Attorney. Based on the reports in this incident, the DA’s office has filed a Felony charge of 245(a)(1) PC, assault with a deadly weapon with a special allegation charge. The suspect was transported to and booked at West Hollywood Station, on April 27, 2011.
