The Los Angeles Times is now reporting that Beverly Hills officers were there serving a search warrant in connection with the Ronni Chasen murder that has been in national headlines.
Beverly Hills Police referred to the man as a “person of interest” rather than a suspect. According to the Times, the man pulled out a gun and shot himself in the lobby area of the building as Beverly Hills detectives approached. (Read more from a witness to the scene)
Weho Daily can confirm that LAPD officers were dispatched to 5640 Santa Monica Blvd, which appears to be a residential apartment building called the Harvey Apartments. Other news reports have since confirmed the location.
Further details are not yet available about the connection to the Chasen case, except that the man had reportedly been under surveillance for some time.
UPDATE: A neighbor told the Times that the man may have been an ex-convict and had vowed not to be taken back to prison alive. He reportedly had been evicted from the apartment building but had been coming back to see if police were looking for him, and said he was expecting to come into money in the amount of about $10,000.
