The City of West Hollywood will host the 2010 AIDS Walk Los Angeles (AWLA) thisĀ  Sunday, October 17, 2010.

The event starts at 9:15 a.m. at West Hollywood Park, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

AIDS Walk Los Angeles has a 6.2-mile route around the streets of the area, and is expected to host 30,000 participants showing their support for AIDS awareness and activism. The money raised by AWLA benefits AIDS Project Los Angeles and other AIDS service organizations across Los Angeles County.

There may be some traffic delays getting around West Hollywood on Sunday morning, so be prepared. The walk route will begin at San Vicente and Santa Monica Boulevards and head east on Santa Monica to La Cienega Boulevard, then will head south down La Cienega to Melrose Avenue, turning east on Melrose to La Brea Avenue, then turn south down La Brea to Beverly Boulevard, then will head west on Beverly back to San Vicente, to complete the walk.

Twenty-six years after the first AIDS Walk event, the statistics remain startling. Half of all new HIV infections occur in people 25 years of age or younger; in the United States, one in five of those infected with HIV each year is unaware of their status; and every nine and a half minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV. Since its inception, the AIDS Walk movement has raised more than a half billion dollars nationwide.

Street closures during AIDS Walk will include:

  • Santa Monica Boulevard between San Vicente Boulevard and La Brea Avenue
  • Melrose Avenue between La Brea Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard.
