A proposed eight-story building at the crossroads of Sunset Blvd, La Cienega and Miller Dr brought a group of residents from the area out to a West Hollywood planning commission meeting last week to protest the project, reports Park La Brea News.
Many said that they were caught a bit off guard by the project and how far along it already is. Concern focused around the additional traffic that would be brought to the already complicated intersection, of which the narrow and problematic Miller Dr., which leads up the hill, is a part.
Another complication is that the project site spans both Los Angeles as well as West Hollywood, so there are two bureaucracies to deal with for the developer… and for the residents to send their complaints.
The project would replace the apartments directly at the north end of La Cienega, at 8497 and 8499 Sunset Blvd., with 34 residential units – 24 market price condos and 10 affordable housing units – and 9,200 square feet of business space for retail and a restaurant.
Plus, it sounds like there could be a big huge digital billboard at the intersection, at least according to the draft EIR report. The renderings of the building appear to show a school of fish in the place where advertising would be shown in practice.
The building would be terraced up the hillside, with only the first three levels fronting the street. Atop that would be a large terrace with a swimming pool, then more residential units would rise along the hillside, set back from the street frontage.

I totally support the project!! It’s beautiful, well-planned, and will make the area more vibrant, pedestrian-friendly, and will enhance the area.
As for the NIMBY protesters – they should move to South Dakota, or to Idaho, if they don’t want those project in their “backyards”. In other words, the selfish opponents should simply be ignored.

This project has to be rethought so it does not impact the residential community in terms of views, noise and traffic. I think it would make sense for someone to take a much closer look at the EIR and approvals received thus far.
