Law enforcement and crime prevention experts have long known that hot weather can bring out prowlers, taking advantage of open windows and patio doors.
So it might not be a coincidence that there seemed to be a rash of prowler reports in and around our area overnight.
Sheriff’s deputies in West Hollywood responded to a report close to midnight on Crescent Heights around Norton, where a woman thought she heard someone try to come in her kitchen door. Los Angeles Police were also working incidents as of 2AM on the 1300 block of North Orange Drive, between La Brea and Highland, and on June Street in Hancock Park, close to Highland and 3rd Street.
People were home in all of these incidents.
There were also reports to LAPD of a burglary suspect around 3rd and Robertson, and suspicious circumstances at a business near Melrose Avenue and Orlando (an open window).
So even with the hot weather, it’s an important time to make sure your windows and doors are secure, especially on the ground level. It might be tempting to leave them open if you are running out during the day for a short trip, but that could prove to be a terrible mistake. And as we’ve seen tonight, being home and in bed isn’t an adequate deterrent for some criminals, so do what you can to keep cool without leaving your home exposed and vulnerable.
Being a good neighbor is always one of the best crime prevention tools, and can be extra important during hot weather. Watchful eyes in the neighborhood can spot suspicious individuals and alert law enforcement and the community to their presence while they are trying to size up potential locations with these hot weather vulnerabilities.
