We’ve just heard the amazing news via LAist and LA Weekly of the capture of the man suspected in the brutal 2009 murder of Paulina Ibarra, a Hollywood trans woman.

The sites quote the LAPD saying she was found fatally stabbed on the floor of her apartment at 939 N. Mariposa Ave. on Aug. 28.

It was not suspected of being a hate crime, according to TheEastsider blog, in a report on the crime in the weeks following the murder.

Jesus Catlan has been on the run for months, as the primary LAPD suspect in the murder of the 24 year old. He was arrested at the San Ysidro border station between San Diego and Tijuana, reports Americas Most Wanted.

Mexican authorities arrested Catalan on unknown charges over the weekend in Northern Mexico, then dropped him off at the border when they realized he was in Mexico illegally.  That’s when U.S. authorities fingerprinted him and found out he had a warrant out for his arrest on the murder.

AMW reports that LAPD detectives were sent to San Diego to retrieve Catalan and bring him back to Los Angeles where he will be booked and charged.

Based on AMW reports, it seems that the suspect was known to pick up trans women by his friends. He showed up on the night of the murder at a friend’s home, drenched in blood, saying that he had been in a gang fight.

The friends didn’t buy his story, and when they heard about Paulina’s murder that night, they arrived at the crime scene with his bloody clothes and turned them over to police.

Cops were relieved to get whatever leads they could, especially possible DNA evidence, said AMW.

Jesus Catalan had not been seen since the night of the murder. DNA tests later confirmed that Catalan’s clothes contained Paulina’s blood in addition to his own.
