Update (July 3, 5pm): It appears that the pedestrian has died from his injuries.

The accident happened on San Vicente, just south of Melrose, near Rangely.

West Hollywood Sheriff’s deputies and fire department personnel responded to the call and are preparing for what appears to be a prolonged investigation because of a serious injury or death.

The investigation will likely look at any factors that might have contributed to the accident, including driver distraction, impairment and speed.

Brandy (Brandy29) on Twitter reported that the pedestrian appeared to have been struck about a half block outside the crosswalk.

We are gathering details now but if you have information, please post comments below.

I saw this — not the accident, but the pedestrian in the street a few moments later. What a horrifying sight. Would like to see you follow up on the fire department response, which seemed to be delayed. Was Engine 7 out on another call when this happened?

Drivers (all of us) need to be aware of peds – always! And pedestrians need to use caution “stop, look, listen” (remember that from grade school?), use cross-walks, etc. We have a lot of ped traffic in our city with clubs, tourists, shopping, etc. It’s actually a wonder this doesn’t happen more often.

I would like to see an end to all crosswalks not at signaled intersections. People will still jay-walk, but those mid-block crossings give a false sense of security to peds and aren’t marked well enough for drivers.

There have been other car/pedestrian accidents on this stretch of road. The city has been asked before to put in a stop light, but apparently they prefer injuries and loss of life rather than go to the effort and expense of installing a traffic signal. That’s a pretty cynical trade-off. People should contact city council members and demand they install a light.

Any updates? I hope the man was able to stay alive. Sadly it looks like while tweeting an texting brings us instant news and communication it also may have contributed to changing forever the lives of many people.

My wife saw this , the mans body landing 10 ft away from where she stood. People stop texting , put the cell phones away while driving, crossing streets. That one second you spend looking at the screen could be the last thing you ever see as a living being.

    Praying for good news,
