In celebration of its 25th Anniversary, West Hollywood celebrates its pre-Cityhood history with a display of vintage neon signs from old Route 66.

The City of West Hollywood in collaboration with the Museum of Neon Art presents On Route — 66 Lights, vintage and contemporary outdoor neon art on historic Route 66 (Santa Monica Boulevard) and the Sunset Strip.

“They’ve been going up slowly for some time, but this week has been the most visible part of the installations,” said local resident Joel McKenna.

“This morning, they finished with one at the island at Holloway and Santa Monica Blvd. Three are between Holloway and La Cienega.”

Another local, Julia Moonves, had an interesting take on the art. “So you’re telling me when walking home drunk, there’s going to be a sign for Winchell’s at a place that won’t sell me donuts?”

A brochure will be available from the city, providing a tour of other vintage and contemporary neon in the City, as well as providing a brief look at neon, and the City’s historic association with Route 66 and the Sunset Strip.

We at the Route 66 Mother Road Museum in Barstow, CA are thrilled to see the old Winchell’s Donut Sign restored and on display for all to see. The sign was rescued by the museum when the Upland (Route 66) Winchell’s closed and later given to the Museum of Neon Art. Thank you MONA and Hollywood for your outstanding dedication! route66museum.org
