Why doesn’t West Hollywood have term limits for elected officials? It’s a question that a group of about 20 people protesting at Monday’s city council meeting would like answered. Some city council members have been governing the City of West Hollywood for over 20 years, and on Monday night, protesters donned masks and signs as John Heilman took the oath to become Mayor (again).

Heilman has held the position several times in the past. According to Wikipedia, Heilman was elected to the first City Council in November 1984 and has served continuously since then. John Heilman was chosen as the City’s second Mayor in 1985, and also served as Mayor in 1990, 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2006.

That’s an awfully long time for someone to hold ANY position. It does seem like some fresh thinking from new faces might be a good thing once in awhile.

In an email to L.A. Weekly, West Hollywood residents Mito Aviles and ChadMichael Morrisette, a gay couple who made national headlines for hanging a Sarah Palin mannequin from their roof, are taking full responsibility for, what they term, an “art attack.”

You can read all about it in the latest L.A. Weekly write-up of the goings on in our city. The paper recently wrote an extended article discussing our city politics, entitled “West Follywood: How a progressive town founded on renters’ rights and diversity ended up gridlocked, angry and elitist.”
